This UK walking holiday starts in Okehampton, Devon. The circular walking trail meanders across rolling moorland, through quaint Devon thatched villages, along secluded wooded valleys, over clapper bridges, and around Dartmoor’s unique tors.

Let’s Go Walking’s offices are based just off the Dartmoor Way and all our staff are familiar with the route. They will be happy to answer any questions regarding the route and will do their best to make this walking tour a memorable vacation.
A fascinating walking tour through Devon’s history; with prehistoric stone circles, clapper bridges and crosses from England’s medieval times, ruined Norman castles, relics of tin mines and abandoned Dartmoor granite quarries.

This Dartmoor walking holiday is alive with wildlife. Bring the binoculars as there is plenty to see: Dartmoor ponies, sheep, cattle, butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies, stonechats, chaffinches, skylarks, and buzzards are just some of the wildlife you are almost guaranteed to see on this UK hiking tour. This Devon walking holiday can be walked over 6 days (about 13 miles per day), or you can take it more leisurely over 8 days (about 10 miles per day). If you don’t have that amount of time, then walk it in 2 sections.

Special diets can be catered for, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free.

We organize the luggage transfer so your bags are at your next accommodation when you arrive. We try to get your bags delivered by 4pm, but this may be delayed due to road conditions.

Our offices are staffed 9am to 9pm during our walking season (March to September) to ensure your walking holiday runs without a hitch.

All our walking holidays are self-guided and you must be a confident map reader and able to navigate from a compass bearing.  The weather in the UK and Ireland can change quickly effecting visibility and underfoot conditions. It is important to carry a selection of clothing with you on your hike each day to cope with changing weather conditions. If you are not confident of completing any days walk, do not set out.

This walking holiday in the UK operates March to September and in either direction.

The daily distances are only a suggestion. If you would like to walk longer or shorter distances, we can arrange that too.
Our stated distances include mileage to the accommodation or pickup point and so may not agree with the guide book mileages.
Rest days can be taken in any location.

Why not combine this walk with a hiking tour in another part of the UK or Ireland. Our staff will be happy to advise on necessary transfers.

Day 1: Arrive at Okehampton
To start this UK  Devon based walking holiday you make your own way to Okehampton. Car parking is available, or we can assist with transfers from London or Exeter.

Day 2: Okehampton to Mary Tavy           13 miles
Leaving Okehampton the Dartmoor Way you pass Okehampton Castle sacked by Henry VIII. Then along the slopes of Sourton Tor to Lydford where you could visit Lydford Gorge and Lydford Castle. A section of today’s walk on the Dartmoor Way joins up with the West Devon Way. You end your day at the village of Mary Tavy.

Day 3:  Mary Tavy to Princetown          12 miles
Leaving Mary Tavy the Dartmoor Way passes small hamlet of Peter Tavy. Then walking on to the edge of the famous Devon town of Tavistock.  From Sampford Spiney the Dartmoor Way offers stunning views over the West side of Dartmoor. Ending your day in Princetown with its famous Dartmoor Prison . Princetown has a choice of pubs and places to eat.

Day 4: Princetown to Ashburton          15 miles
The Dartmoor National Park Vistiors centre is well worth a visit before you leave Princetown.  The first section of todays walk crosses open moorland until reaching Hexworthy.  Then on to Dartmeet  where the East and West River Dart’s meet to form one of the west countrys most famous river, the River Dart. Walking on to  Buckfastleigh with it is South Devon Steam Railway, one of Englands best loved preserved steam railways running from Buckfastleigh to Totnes and then a boat to Dartmouth. In Buckfastleigh there is a Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary and you must not miss Buckfast Abbey. Then a short walk on to Ashburton. Many guests take an optional extra day to explore the attractions on offer in this area of Devon.

Day 5:  Ashburton to Manaton             12 miles
Today the Dartmoor Way follows the southeast edge of Dartmoor through the pretty hamlets of  Sigford and Liverton  From the larger town of Bovey Tracey the Dartmoor Way follows  River Bovey through pretty Lustleigh Cleave to the hamlet of Manaton.

Day 6: Manaton to Chagford         12 miles
From Manaton the Dartmoor Way passes North Bovey and Moretonhampstead with its selection old inns, independent shops and Motor Museum. En-route  you can see one of Dartmoor’s intriguing tors, Bowerman’s Nose. From Moretonhampstead the Dartmoor Way  makes it way to the River Teign and lovely Teign Gorge via Fingle Bridge and the popular riverside inn the Fingle Bridge Inn. Ending today’s walk on The Dartmoor Way in Chagford, one of the most popular towns on Dartmoor with it fine selection of inns and interesting shops.

Day 7:  Chagford to Okehampton              12 miles
Leaving Chaford the Dartmoor Way crosses the Two Moors Way.  Then through the Dartmoor hamlets of Throwleigh with its lovely church and South Zeal. On from South Zeal the village of Sticklepath is well worth exploring with its water powered foundry operated by The National Trust (Finch Foundry) and popular local pub The Tor River Inn.  Then you walk up the stunning Belstone Cleave to Belstone, one of the prettiest Dartmoor Villages. Belstone has a lovely old inn “The Tors” and a pretty church. Belstone village offers stunning views over Dartmoor toward Cosdon Hill. From Belstone the Dartmoor Way follows East Okement River most of the way into Okehampton.

Day 8: Depart after breakfast
Depart after breakfast or extend your holiday walking and spend some time exploring the Okehampton area and Devons North Coast.
