The Leeds and Liverpool Canal
Walking Holiday in Northern England
from Leeds to Liverpool

Enjoy a self-guided walking holiday on the 127 miles of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Towpath. Leaving Leeds the canal visits picturesque villages in the Yorkshire Dales, crosses the Pennines and passes through East Lancashire before reaching Liverpool. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is the longest single canal in Britain built by a single company.

On this English self-guided walking holiday you hike through some of the highlights of Britain’s industrial heritage as it meanders its way via Skipton, Burnley, Blackburn and Wigan, although you hardly notice the metropolis on this quiet corridor of calm that is the canal.

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal walking trail is a great introduction to walking holidays in UK.

This canal towpath can be walked in two weeks of 12 days walking and 13 nights,
or split into two weeks each of 6 days walking and 7 nights. Walking on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath is a great way to explore the diverse waterway environment.

The canal was built in the late 1700’s to transport raw materials such as coal, limestone, wool and manufactured goods such a textiles and cloth to the growing port of Liverpool, gateway to the Irish Sea and the Americas.

The hiking route is a great first walking holiday as it is fairly easy walking and offers a wealth of interesting places to visit en-route.
