You make your own way to Helford Passage. We can assist with rail and coach transfers if necessary. Car parking is available for the duration of the walk.
Day 2: Trebah Gardens, Carwinion Gardens and Glendurgan
Spend the day visiting Trebah, Carwinion and Glendurgan. Trebah is a spectacular subtropical 26 acre ravine garden sweeping down to a secluded beach on the Helford Estuary. Carwinion Garden has 12 peaceful acres containing an outstanding collection of bamboo, camellias, hydrangeas, ferns, wild flowers and exotics. Glendurgan is a valley garden with many fine trees, rare exotic shrubs, magnolias, camellias and wild flowers.
Day 3: Helford Passage to Falmouth 10 miles moderate
The wooded path follows along the Helford River and there are occasional views of the estuary through the trees. You head out towards Rosemullion Head where you can see Falmouth and Pendennis Point in the distance. Pendennis Castle, and its counterpart at St Mawes, date from the mid-16th century.
Day 4: Falmouth to Portloe, via Lamorran House Gardens 14 miles Strenuous
You take the ferry from Falmouth to St Mawes where you visit the 4.5 acres of Lamorran House Gardens (Wednesdays and Fridays only) set out in an Italianate style with an extensive collection of subtropical plants. Another ferry takes you to Place and you walk the South West Coast Path to Portloe.
Day 5: Portloe to Mevagissey, Caerhays Castle and Gardens 12 miles Strenuous
You walk around Veryan Bay through the villages of West and East Portholland where there is an old limekiln on the beach. Caerhays has an informal woodland garden (open until mid-June) created by J C Williams who sponsored plant-hunting expeditions to China at the turn of the 19th century. National magnolia collection. Also camellias, rhododendrons and oaks.
Day 6: Lost Gardens of Heligan
Spend the whole day at the Lost Gardens of Heligan where there are over 200 acres of working Victorian gardens with magnificent complex of walled gardens, summerhouses, lakes, huge productive gardens and fruit houses. Overnight at Mevagissey.
Day 5: Mevagissey to Charlestown 7 miles Strenuous
The first electric lights in this 13th century fishing village of Mevagissey were powered by generating fed on pilchard oil! The path becomes a little more adventurous as you pass through the old china clay port of Pentewan and round Black Head. The 18th century port of Charlestown comes into view. The harbour is home to some fine old sailing ships and has been used as a location in many films.
Day 8: The Eden Project
A 4 mile inland walk or local bus takes you to The Eden Project. In the Humid Tropics Biome you can experience the sights, smells and sheer scale of the rainforest in the world’s largest greenhouse. The Temperate Biome you experience the diversity of the Mediterranean. No matter what the season, the terraced gardens will be a riot of colour. Overnight in Charlestown.
