The Northumberland Coast Pathfrom Cresswell to the Scottish border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed,
via the Northumberland coast towns of Alnmouth, Warkworth, Craster, Dunstanburgh Castle, Seahouses, Bamburgh and Holy Island/Lindisfarne.
The Northumberland Coast Path walking holiday is 72 miles long and is on one of UK’s long distance way-marked walking trails.
The walking holiday begins on the Northumberland coast at
Cresswell and ends near the Scottish border at Berwick-upon-Tweed.
This walking holiday is suitable as a first hiking vacation as it is quite easy walking along this North Sea Coast with small seaside villages & towns, some great castles and Holy Island.
Spend a day visiting The Farne Island famous for puffins and fulmers.
You can take rest days en-route to explore galleries, museums and the fine selection of shops, restaurants and pubs.

The Northumberland Coast Path passes through towns and villages connected with 7th century King of Northumbria who helped bring Christianity to this part of Northern England.

Our offices are staffed 9am to 9pm during our walking season (March to September) to ensure your walking holiday runs without a hitch.
All our walking holidays are self-guided and you must be a confident map reader and able to navigate from a compass bearing. The weather in the UK and Ireland can change quickly effecting visibility and underfoot conditions. It is important to carry a selection of clothing with you on your hike each day to cope with changing weather conditions. If you are not confident of completing any days walk, do not set out.
This walking holiday in the UK operates March to September and in either direction.
The daily distances are only a suggestion. If you would like to walk longer or shorter distances, we can arrange that too.
Our stated distances include mileage to the accommodation or pickup point and so may not agree with the guide book mileages.
Rest days can be taken in any location.
Why not combine this walk with a hiking tour in another part of the UK or Ireland. Our staff will be happy to advise on necessary transfers.

from Cresswell to Berwick-upon-Tweed near the Scottish border

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Cresswell
To start your walking holiday on the Northumberband Coast Path walking trail you make your own way to Cressell in Northern England. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary. Car parking is available for the duration of your self-guided walking holiday on Northumberland Coast Path.
Day 2: Cresswell to Warkworth 12 miles
The Northumberland Coast Path starts from Cresswell and the hiking trail follows the sandy shoreline of Druridge Bay to the Wildlife Reserve at Low Hauxley. The walking route passes along sand dunes before reaching the fishing port of Amble, then around the River Coquet estuary before reaching Warkworth with its large castle.
Day 3: Warkworth to Craster 13 miles
Walking on from Warkworth the Northumberland Coastal Path shares the same trail as St Oswald’s Way and passes fine golden sands before reaching Alnmouth. The hiking trail passes the famous old smuggling fishing village of Boumer, Sugar Sands and Cullernose Point. Today’s walk ends at the fishing village of Craster. Any visit to Craster should include a taste of its famous oaked smoked kippers or salmon.
Day 4: Craster to Seahouses 10 miles
Walking on from Craster the hiking trail passes the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, a great place to take that holiday picture. Walking on along the golden sands of Embleton Bay, the route passes through Low Newton by Sea with its little beach huts and fine old inn before reaching the busy little harbour of Seahouses via Beadnell.
Optional Day in Seahouses: Farne Islands or rest day
Take a rest day in Seahouses and just relax, or take a boat to The Farne Islands famous for its puffins and seabirds.
Day 5: Seahouses to Belford 11 miles
Walking on from Seahouses the hiking trail reaches the lovely coastal town of Bamburgh with a stunning castle, well worth a visit, and selection of restaurants and fine bars. Hiking on past Budle Point and Warren the trail heads inland to busy little town of Belford with its interesting selection of inns.
Day 6: Belford to Holy Island/Lindisfarne 12 miles
You soon see fine views south to Bamburgh Castle and north to Berwick-on-Tweed. The route shares the walking trail with St Cuthbert’s Way. At Fenwick the walking trail head back to the coast and you take the causeway over to Holy Island (Lindisfarne). The causeway to Holy Island is tidal and so this holiday is only available when the tides are favourable. Lindisfarne is one western Europe’s most important Christian sites, the first abbey dating back to 635AD. The Priory that now stands in ruins is 11th century. The castle on the island dates back to Henry VIII, is now run by the National Trust and well worth a visit. This island is a special place with so much to see a great place to extend your stay.

Day 7: Holy Island/Lindisfarne to Berwick-upon-Tweed 14 miles
Walking from Lindsfarne, the Holy island via the causeway the hiking trail crosses large expanse of Goswick Sands and The Nature Reserve at Cocklawburn. The trail enters Berwick-upon-Tweed via the town of Spittal and the Old Bridge over the Tweed. Berwick-upon-Tweed is a fine town with much to offer the visitor . The town has a Lowery trail passing many views made famous by the artist.

Day 8: Depart after breakfast
Depart after Breakfast or extend your holiday walking and spend some time exploring Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.
